My Review of Weapons • A Horror Film of Inches

Movie Review

The first thing I want to talk about is something that surprised me, which is that the tone of Weapons is far lighter than I had anticipated. Given the premise and the upgrade in dramatic actors, I thought maybe this would be Cregger moving away from the goofiness of Barbarian (which I liked) for horror that was more operatic, more intense, more thought-provoking. It’s a small step in that direction, but for the most part, Weapons, like Barbarian before it, is a horror-comedy good time (not that there's anything wrong with that).

On the positive side, I do think Cregger has an elevated understanding of the horror-comedy dynamic this time around--using the comedy serves as a pressure-reliever as the film tightens and tightens the tension. It also uses the great cast to great effect, shifting perspectives in a clever way that increases tension.
