Just an immigrant sharing her frustration over European Culture.
Hey everyone,
I’m having a hard time tonight. I’ve lived in Germany for two years, and today I had a conversation with someone I thought was a friend. Now I can’t sleep. I’ve been reflecting a lot on why I feel so frustrated with some people here.
So, I wrote something. I’m not sure what it is exactly, maybe a poem, maybe just a way to release my thoughts. It’s raw and emotional, but it helped me process a bit.
I want to be clear: I like living in Germany, and my partner is European. This isn’t about hating a place or people. It’s more about the cultural differences that sometimes feel really heavy when you come from a different background, especially one shaped by colonial history.
Here’s what I wrote:
European Culture
What I have learned from European culture is that personal benefit often outweighs collective well-being. A cold way of thinking, rarely pausing to consider what might make others happy, or what someone is giving up just to make me feel comfortable.
Perhaps this obsession with rules is not about justice but gain. “If they do it, why can’t I?” Instead of: “If they can do it, maybe I can help, too.”
Everything feels mechanical, calculated. They brought Christianity to us morals, ethics but also stole, raped, and destroyed.
Rules only apply when they benefit me.
No wonder Indoamerican civilizations were conquered: they welcomed strangers with open arms, and in return, they received chains.
I’ve come to the conclusion: I do not like this culture, And since they colonized us, it is natural that I don’t like parts of mine either. But when I reflect, what I love about my culture is precisely what sets it apart from theirs.
Europeans. The “First World.” The world of me first.
