AITA for wanting my girlfriend to come and visit me more?
I (16m) am upset that my (18f) girlfriend of two years feels like she doesn't need to come and visit me. For the past year, we have been in a long-distance relationship. My parents had to move for a promotion, and now she and I live four hours away. Although this year has been challenging, we've managed to make it work. For anyone wondering how we manage to see each other, there is a bus line that travels from a nearby city to a town close to her house; the only issue is that it costs $100 for a round ticket, so commuting gets pretty expensive for two students. The issue began to occur when I was the one who went down the most.
For some background knowledge, there was a mix-up with the house sale, and I ended up living at her house for a month before moving into the new house with my parents. So after I moved and during the school year, I was usually the one to go down (to clear the air, this made a bit of sense for the time, she works during school and has stricter parents than I do, so a lot of the time it landed on me going since the only commitments I have are school and a low-maintenance sport). My parents were great and supported our relationship very well by paying for the bus ticket and driving me to the stop, often letting me miss a day of school to get to see her for longer. My girlfriend did come down a bit, but it was only on school long weekends and breaks, letting her maintain her grades while I mine took a hit. I also missed out on some opportunities to connect and make friends at this new school since I spent most weekends early on at her house.
This worked out great on her side, and although my grades sank, I was okay, just as long as I got to see her. During spring break, my family decided to go on a vacation to the Caribbean. My parents offered for my girlfriend to come along, which was a wonderful surprise. They even spent a couple of hundred dollars to cover some of the cost because she had to pay for all of her expenses (her parents let her go, but didn't cover any costs). We had a fun week, and after we agreed that I would be the one to visit her since she spent a lot of money on the trip. After exams ended, she and I both agreed that we would be able to see each other a lot more during the summer, which we were both excited about. However, as this past month has gone on, she's only come down for 3 days while I've been down for over 27 (summer vacation is mid-late June to August).
I am moving out after this next school year, and so after I came back from another week at her house, my parents, understandably, missed me and want me to spend more time at home. They told me that I shouldn't go up again until she's come down at least once. I have told her this, and for the past little while, I've been asking her if she has any plans to come down or not. Today I asked her, and she finally told me to stop asking because she's starting to feel guilty. She explained that she doesn't want to come down until after the first month of school (October) because she moves out in September and wants to live with her mom until then.
For anyone wondering if I have a job or not, I have been in the recruiting process of the army for three months now. They offer a reserve program that you have to be 16 to enter. The process has been slow, and they originally said that I would be in a training program by the end of June, but have screwed me over and now are telling me that I'll be in for the start of September. So I understand why I was the one who's been going down the most, but I still deep down feel that it is a bit unfair for her to only come down 3 days out of the last month.
I am upset at this, in my view I've sacrificed my grades, social life, family time, and hobbies to spend time with her. I've missed school days and family celebrations to see her. But I also understand where she is coming from. AITA?
