Thoughts on “neurotypical” actors playing “neurodivergent characters”

I recently watched a video where this was discussed, everyone was a heavy “NO” about it and I get why, but if it is done well, with a lot of research, what is the harm. If it is the best audition and most convincing actor, then isn’t that was acting is for, we don’t have to be like or go through what the character has, to be able to portray them convincingly. I think there’s like bad energy from when there’s been some awful representation of adhd and autism but that’s like classic shit acting and a failure of the industry on finding the best person. I believe everyone should have the chance to play anything, If it’s based on the best acting (not social media presence or popularity) then I’m happy for whoever gets it. I would be devastated if I was only allowed to play roles that were alike to me or my life. It kind of reminded me how often actors who are not natively British but reside here in England often get cast for the “French girl/boy” or “Russian girl” “the charming italian”- never as lead roles, even if you do not need to be English native. They kind of only ever get cast as what they are labelled as from an outsider, and never cast as an individual who can bring a character to life just like anyone else, except they may have a different accent. But fuck me, half the stories I watch, the accent is irrelevant, I want more diversity, not just in colour, but from all over the world NOT JUST telling stories of others cultures or always related to their background or origin, but just everyday fucking stories . I think we need to allow more flexibility in the acting industry.
