Design help for a locking, retractable cord reel?
I see a lot of desktop cable organizers out there, mostly the kind that just hold the cable(s) when not in use, more like a hanger for the usable end.
I'm just spitballing here, but I want to design a retractable reel that locks in place when extended, like a water hose or air hose reel. Pull it out to the intended length (that's what she said) and it'll lock in place. Then a small pull/tug will release the lock and it'll roll back up.
I'm not sure how those hose reels work, and I'm not sure the spring mechanism would be 3D printed (else I don't think it would last long before deforming and losing its springiness).
Anyone with any insight into this? I've seen a few cable reels with one fixed end and one retractable end. But you have to manually reel them.
My ideal case scenario would he a charging station where only the cables in use would be extended and the others would be automatically wound inside a sleek box.
🤔 🤷
