Confused on what to do for my future. I want to pursue a career in astrophysics but it doesn’t look like I will make good money until I’m 30.
I am 17 yrs old. I work really hard in school so that I can be successful in the future, I have a 3.6 gpa and a 4.2 weighted gpa. I also do dual enrollment (if my grammar sucks don’t judge lol, I’m kinda typing this fast and don’t really care abt grammar mistakes.) Anyway, my point is that I try really hard to give myself the opportunity to make a live able wage by the time I’m 25 (in this economy, I want 60k at least for starting out), the thing is I can’t see myself doing anything else besides astrophysics. I want to have enough money to live comfortably in my 30s, not just enough money to live off. I want to study cosmology so badly, but I’m so confused on how I’m going to afford to live and start my life. It looks like I’ll being living of a stipend until I’m 30, which will only give me money for an apartment and groceries (which I would be thankful for) but I want to start a family between the ages of 26-30. I won’t be able to afford to have a wedding and kids if I’m living off a stipend. Plus, I have a large feeling that once I graduate at 30 yrs old I’ll only be making 70k, ik there’s entry level jobs for 100k but let’s be realistic here lol, I’m smart but I’m not a genius.
I guess my question is, how do I afford my dreams? How can I become an astrophysicist if I’m spending most of my early years doing school? I don’t understand how loans and stipends work. I’ve been trying to figure all this out on my own but Google keeps giving me riddles instead of answers. Whenever I look on indeed the only jobs I can find for “astrophysics major” is a job fixing computers. I want to do a job that has SOMETHING to do with space and the universe.
Another thing. What kind of scientist would I be? Which makes the best money? Should I be data analysis astrophysicist (is that even a thing?) should I be a research scientist? I need a specific because it doesn’t matter how many times I read articles on it, they never answer specifics. It’s sooo frustrating.
Keep in mind, I don’t come from money. I live with my single mother who is already paying for my brothers college, so you can see why I’m so worried about affording things.
I need help understanding what my path looks like. From my research I assume I should get my bachelors in computer science and masters in astrophysics and then do astrophysics for my PHD. But I’m still confused on things like loans and paying for living. Idkkkk
