Have we been Mispronouncing our National Flower's Name this Whole Time?
Every piece of local media I know pronounces the "Joachim" part of Vanda "Miss Joachim" as "Joe-Kim", but I was just ruminating on that actor fellow from the Joker movies (and don't you hate that there's an 's' at the end), and his name is Joaquin Pheonix, pronounced "Wa-keen". So I do a little digging and turns out the name Joachim is Hebrew in origin (explaining the silent "j"). Even Google and YouTube will instruct it to be pronounced "Yo-wa-khim" (with that Arabic "h"/"ch" sound). So how did we get here? Is this a "Joshua son of Joseph" type situation? I just answered my own question, didn't I?
