Deconstructing Mormonism Hurts Like Hell
Leaving Mormonism has been one of the most painful things I’ve ever gone through. It’s not just about letting go of doctrine, it’s about unraveling decades of emotional and social conditioning. Even though I know the Church is undeniably false, a part of me still longs for it. It gave me comfort, familiarity, identity, a community of like-minded people, and seemingly clear answers to life’s biggest questions.
I think that’s why it’s especially hard for deeply devout members to leave. The indoctrination runs so deep that your very way of thinking is shaped by it. Our minds resist breaking away from long-held patterns. And psychologically, the Church gives people exactly what we crave: certainty, purpose, belonging, and support. That’s why even when you show someone all the evidence disproving Mormonism, it often doesn’t matter because humans aren’t purely rational. We hold onto what makes us feel safe.
