Hey all, I inherited this roof and I’m trying to make it work on a DIY budget since I don’t plan to stay in this house long.

It’s an attached garage. Small roof with two planes: lower is about 0.5:12, upper is totally flat. Sometime in the past someone built the higher section and just rolled new roofing over what was there and called it a day, so I’m trying to fix it properly.

I’m removing a window on the upper plane to add some slope, but I can’t make the two planes match since I want to keep the lower window and don’t have the headroom to drop the upper. So, Franken-roof it is.

I’ll be stripping the old roofing, replacing any bad decking, patching the upper window opening, and doing new soffit, fascia, and drip edge. Plan is GAF Liberty self-adhered mod-bit. From what I understand, metal won’t fly at this pitch.

Where I’m stuck and could use direction:
	•	Step or transition from upper to lower: I want to avoid a pond at the step. My rough ideas are to frame a little slope, sheath it, and run the membrane over it, or get a custom-bent flashing to bridge the step and tie the membrane into and over it. If there’s a smarter way, I’d love to hear it.
	•	Adding slope on the upper: My ideas are tapered furring or sleepers with new sheathing, or tapered insulation under the membrane. Or just rebuild the framing here entirely with the proper slope.  Not sure which makes more sense here on a budget.
	•	Wall tie-in on the high side: I was planning to run the self-adhered mod-bit up the stucco and use a termination bar with counter flashing, but I’m not 100% sure. Should I instead do custom-bent metal counterflashing or a reglet and tie the membrane into that?
