Should I approach the director about a pay increase?
I am a student employed at a chain daycare/preschool. I’m an assistant teacher and feel like I need to earn more. I’m currently paid $18/hr and the lead teachers are paid $20/hr. Today the lead teacher for my class was out and another assistant teacher that’s cleared ran the class with me. She took care of the kids when they had to use the bathroom and we split everything else. Most of the lead teachers have a CD degree which is a 5 week course and I’m in the final year of BA from a top 10 university and it’s clear that I know significantly more than them. I can understand the infants-toddler classes are ran like daycares but for preschool? The lead for my class doesn’t do anything. They create curriculums and don’t follow through which is a shame because I was looking forward to that most of all. I have experience at a previous internship creating and following through with the material, I’ve created personal curriculums for the kids I’ve tutored, and do tutoring on the side and I’m paid $50/hr, I’ve also taken a class called creative curriculum which is all about curriculum design and got an A. I was in class with the other assistant teacher and she had no idea what to do with the kids. She suggested ChatGPT and was affirmed by other “more seasoned” teachers and when we got into class I told her the kids have a workbook they have to work on so they can do that, and they can also do literally anything- like drawing a picture of their perfect day. This is the lowest paying job I’ve ever had and all of this has been a shock but I’m not sure if it’s normal. I took it because I have a massive debt from school and work full-time at the center, teach English to Korean kids from 3-6, tutor on the weekends and occasionally babysit. I think I should approach the director because I’ve had more than 5 weeks of learning about education, study it extensively and was shocked by the lack of knowledge by the teachers. Should I approach the director? if she says no I plan on taking a legal internship but it’s not paid but my regular students come from vacation in September. *sorry for the grammatical mistakes my head is fried
