I just saw a post complaining about how selfish Ginny is and how she is always 'playing the victim' and something snapped in me.

Ginny doesn't play the victim. She IS a victim.

And..there is nothing wrong with being a victim.
I hate the narrative of "playing the victim, attention seeking". It's so fucking hurtful to dismiss the cruelty of other people's lives simply because you don't want to be confronted by it. Because when someone is a victim, it requires sympathy and empathy from you. Why is that *so* hard for people?

Ginny is a victim of racism, assault, homelesness, poverty, violence, neglect, instability, abandonment from every father figure in her life, a mother who is more of a friend than a mother, her mother is a murderer who killed her stepdad because he assaulted her, she lives with this guilt, she never had friends before Wellsbury and she is a teenager. So yeah, she is self-centered. She couldn't emotionally develop because she was and is surviving, and her life is still unstable and unsafe to properly work through what she has been through. Yes, she complains, but it's not like she doesn't have a reason? Stop looking at her with a lense like she is an adult and is able to make reasonable choices.

I usually am of opinion that people can hate or love whatever character they want. But it's the lack of any empathy in every fucking post that strikes me, and the use of the word "victim". And yes I am projecting, because I had a fucked up youth and met way too many beautiful people who also sadly had a fucked up life. And the worst thing? To be dismissed by people because they made your suffering about them. They felt uncomfortable, they didn't want to bring up the sympathy and empathy. (The irony is: in that case you are actually making yourself a victim about something that has nothing to do with you.

Someone else's suffering doesn't exist to annoy you.

I hope people enjoy the show, I mean that genuinely. Like and dislike whomever you want. I disliked Ginny in many episodes. It's okay to be entertained or love questionable characters. But ask yourself why you are so uncomfortable when someone is actually a victim. And especially when someone speaks up about it. (Example: the racist English teacher).

"Ginny plays the victim all the time". She IS a victim, and the way we look down on people who are, is problematic.
