Is it traditional to put anchovies in an Italian tomato sauce?

Experimented last night by putting in a couple fillets of canned anchovies into a tomato sauce for pasta and it tasted better than any tomato sauce I've ever made. Obviously it gives a ton of umami flavor to the sauce but I was wondering if this was actually a thing?
