Bought a 3ds for £50

I managed to find a 3ds on Facebook for £50. I want to mod it but I saw it is still on firmware version 8.0.0-1 8E.

Do you need to be on the latest firmware to mod it?

Also is it more valuable being on such a low firmware, is it worth me updating?
