Cherki Poised to Power City's Offense

The Kevin De Bruyne era has come to an end and his heir-apparent has already been crowned. Cherki has some massive shoes to fill but is coming off the single best season from a creator perspective of anyone in Europe. Cherki ranks in the Top 10 in Europe across the 3 main statistical categories that measure advancing the ball forward and opportunity creation - progressive actions (PA), shot-creating actions (SCA), and goal-creating actions (GCA).

Cherki's Profile

  • PA/90: 13.74 (5th in Europe) - Drives the ball forward
  • SCA/90: 6.44 (3rd in Europe) - Creates chances
  • GCA/90: 0.88 (9th in Europe) - Creates chances that convert

Analysis of all ~3000 players across Europe's big 5 leagues reveals only six who rank in the top 25 for all three creative metrics, and only Cherki is top 10 in all 3:

  • Rayan Cherki (Lyon)
  • Luka Modrić (Real Madrid)
  • Ousmane Dembélé (PSG)
  • Michael Olise (Bayern Munich)
  • Désiré Doué (PSG)
  • Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen)

All are household names and, crucially, none are from the ultra-competitive Premier League. Ligue One is notoriously the weakest of the Big 5 with Bundesliga and La Liga a step above. As Cherki joins the world's deepest league from top to bottom, his ability to adjust to this level of weekly competition is critical.

Here's how the top EPL creators fared in the same analysis:

Martin Odegaard

  • PA/90: 13.57 (6th in Europe)
  • SCA/90: 4.8 (41st in Europe)
  • GCA/90: 0.7 (27th in Europe)

Bruno Fernandes

  • PA/90: 12 (15th in Europe)
  • SCA/90: 5.76 (12th in Europe)
  • GCA/90: 0.39 (182nd in Europe)

James Maddison

  • PA/90: 10.4 (42nd in Europe)
  • SCA/90: 4.73 (45th in Europe)
  • GCA/90: 0.9 (7th in Europe)

Kevin De Bruyne

  • PA/90: 11 (27th in Europe)
  • SCA/90: 5.97 (7th in Europe)
  • GCA/90: 0.58 (61st in Europe)

Cherki is expected to not just match but exceed De Bruyne's creative output while bringing an entirely different dimension through his dribbling and close control. His elite creative profile - the only player top 10 across all three metrics - immediately places him among the dark horse Player of the Season candidates.

The addition of Cherki is expected to continue to unlock Haaland's full potential. Doku & Savio will continue to wreak havoc on the wings. Cherki's versatility allows him to play centrally, on either wing, or even as a false nine - giving Guardiola plenty of flexibility to maximize his side weekly. The biggest question is how Pep will deploy Foden & Marmoush with this addition. Grealish's days appear numbered as City moves away from possession-retention to a more direct, chance-creation focused approach.

Last season's third-place finishers are betting that evolution, not replacement, returns them to the summit. With the most statistically dominant creator in Europe now wearing sky blue, City's attack looks set to reach unprecedented levels of dynamism and creativity.
