Are freshman internships needed?

I'm a freshman biomedical engineering student thinking about internships for next summer. A lot of people have said freshmen are unlikely to get them but should apply to as many as possible anyways. Initially that was my plan but my family is going to Asia to visit family for two weeks next summer, which I know would impact my chances of getting internships.

Is it best if I stay home to try and complete internship? Should I go because it's unlikely that I would get one anyway? Would not having an internship next summer impact my career?
