[M4F] Your neighbour who's always here for you (Wholesome romance)
I had given you my number a few months ago, when you moved in "Just in case you need anything" I said. You only ever texted when something needed fixing—fuse box, smoke alarm, stupid stuff the landlord should’ve handled. So when your name lit up my phone at nearly three in the morning, I knew something was wrong.
Your voice was rushed and a little slurred, soft with that same apology you always had when asking for help. Except this time, you weren’t alone. I could hear laughter in the background—high-pitched, half-drunk squeals—and I could already imagine you there, caught in the middle of a group of girls who didn’t know how to plan ahead.
Didn’t matter. I was already getting dressed before you finished explaining. Threw on a hoodie over my T-shirt, jeans, keys in hand, door locked behind me. You didn’t need to ask twice. Hell, you never really asked at all.
I pulled up outside the bar about fifteen minutes later. The sidewalk was scattered with shivering twenty-somethings in short skirts and expensive perfume. You stood off to the side, arms wrapped around yourself, hair a little messy, cheeks flushed from the wine or the night—or maybe both. Your eyes found me instantly.
And then the chaos began.
Your friends piled into the back of the car like noisy birds, heels clacking, voices overlapping, perfume filling every inch of space. You slipped into the front seat with a sheepish look, barely able to meet my eyes. You looked different tonight. Lip gloss, bare shoulders, a dress that showed more skin than I’d ever seen on you. A little grown-up. A little reckless. And still just you.
The teasing started before you could even speak.
One of them leaned between the seats, sizing me up, and the comments came fast—playful, wild, tipsy as hell. I could see the panic rising in your face, like you wanted to shrink into the seat and disappear. I should’ve let you off the hook, but I didn’t. I leaned into it instead. Said something low, teasing, that only made them squeal louder.
You groaned, face in your hands. I kept my eyes on the road, hiding the grin that tugged at my mouth. Not because I was playing some game. Because I liked the way you looked when you were flustered. I always had.
It took three stops to get them all home. Each time the car got a little quieter, a little less perfume, a little more night air. By the time the last one stumbled out and blew you a kiss goodbye, it was just us. I pulled away from the curb and let the silence settle between us. The weight of it felt... comfortable.
You exhaled beside me and kicked off your heel with a soft thunk. I didn’t look over—just kept driving.
“I’m so sorry,” you mumbled after a minute, your voice lower now, a little rough at the edges.
I shrugged. “It’s nothing.”
But you turned your head to look at me then, really look. Your expression was soft, a little unfocused from the wine. The gloss was mostly gone from your lips now, smudged pink at the corners. One strap of your dress had fallen down your shoulder, loose against your skin. You didn’t seem to notice—or maybe you didn’t care.
“You’re being nice again,” you said quietly. Like it was a problem.
I didn’t answer right away. Just pulled into our parking lot and shifted the car into park. The overhead light flicked on and caught you in soft amber. Your skin glowed. You looked tired. Beautiful. A little messy. Real.
You reached for the seatbelt, but your fingers fumbled the latch. You cursed under your breath—half-laughing, half-frustrated—and I reached over without thinking. Just one hand, brushing along your waist as I found the release. It clicked free. Easy.
But the second my fingers grazed your bare skin, I felt it. You went still. Breath caught.
Your eyes met mine, slow and unsure and searching. The noise of the night was long gone. Just the hum of the engine and the sound of your breath. Of mine. Close. Too close.
And in that moment, with your strap slipping lower and your cheeks still pink and your friends long gone… I suddenly wasn’t sure which one of us had just crossed a line. Or whether you even wanted me to step back.
