Any Extras out there with a learning disability? I've got ADHD with pretty bad dyscalculia. Looking for strategies on how to pass the extra exam.
Hey everyone, so a little bit of background on me. I've been involved with radio and emergency services for the better part of 20 years. Decided I should finally make my job my hobby.
In February of this year I passed my technician exam after studying for 4 days. Hyper focus is a great thing. Isn't it folks? Roughly a month later after a a somewhere but slightly longer investment in time. I passed my general. I've been having great fun with HF but secretly long for the additional portions of the 40m band where I can reach Europe on 40 m and other things like that.
I have a high degree of mechanical and technical aptitude and had little to no problem with the first two license exams scoring highly on both. The problem I'm running into is the math on the extra exam.
As someone who never really made it past remedial math in high school (imagine what I could have done with the proper support and medication :/) I struggle with the advanced math that comes with the exam. When I went to take my career fire department exams, I had to get a math in 30 days book to teach myself basic math again so I could pass the exam.
I'm using the fast track to your extra ham license book with both the audiobook and the Kindle version. I've gotten through the first I think 15 chapters which dealt with satellites, operation modes, contesting etc with no problem at all.
However, when getting into the chapters that involve math and calculations kind of disassociate and my brain really just shuts off.
I guess some people have said that you can pass the extra exam by doing exceedingly well on every other part but the mathematical questions. Is that the best strategy or should I sit down with the book and try and work my way through it?
Am I the only one? Can anyone offer some suggestions?
