What External Drive should I use

I have a laptop which has a small amount of storage space so I've been thinking about buying an External HDD or SSD so I can store my favorite shows without running out of storage. Which one would be better to store shows and would storing them on drives cause a drop in video quality? I currently use a mac btw if you need to know. Looking for affordable options
