Why do some people say “you should never meet your heroes”?

I’ve heard this line a lot—“never meet your heroes”—but I don’t fully understand why.

If someone inspired you or changed your life in some way, wouldn’t it be exciting to meet them?

Does it usually go badly when people meet their idols? If yes, why? I’m curious if this is a general truth or just something people say.
