If most/all other education/experience criteria is satisfied, interview success usually comes down to personality and vibe (and some luck).
So I’m definitely not the expert because I haven’t had that many interviews in my life, knock on wood… and this may be specific to my profession (lawyer), but I’ve noticed that every job offer I’ve gotten, I’ve cracked a joke (office appropriate) or tried to reveal my personality (which is relatively laid-back).
I feel that personality and letting that shine -as long as you have a decent one haha- really moves you to the next level in interviews.
Along those same lines, I also think it’s the same personality factor that helps people maintain their jobs. At every firm, I have worked out, it is always been the person who is negative, competitive, not a team player, takes himself for herself too seriously… etc, who always was the misfit and was the first to get laid off or fired.
All that to say, let your true personality shine at your interviews! And good luck to everyone still searching.
This all may be obvious but I just wanted to reiterate the truth of it at least in my experience.
