New Paper Bags at Wegmans?
So wanted to ask about the paper bag situation out of curiosity because something weird happened.
Two weekends ago, was shopping at my local Wegmans in DC and they had these new paper bags. Shorter and with handles, and there was a sign posted at each checkout explaining that the new bags had reinforced handles and bottoms, so there was no need to double bag! So alright, fine. I didn't really like them because they're smaller and I could barely fit anything in them.
This past weekend, I was bagging up my groceries on Sunday afternoon. Used one of the new bags, reached to get another... the shelf was empty. I was confused, looked around, and all the bag shelves were suddenly empty. An employee came over and she put a stack of the old bags (the regular sized grocery bags) on the shelf. I looked around and saw someone wheeling away a huge cart, piled with the New Handle Bags, taking them out of sight. They must have just come through and snatched the New Bags away, as other employees were now distributing the old, regular bags.
Not a big deal obviously, seems like the new bags were a flop, but I thought it was interesting that instead of just using up the remaining stock they decided to purge the bags mid-afternoon, like "We have to stop people from using them NOW." Was wondering if there was any funny behind the scenes story about this, some executive getting over their skis with a New Bag Initiative or something? Handles ripping and causing chaos?
