HSBC application status confusion?

So long story short, I applied for a role at HSBC. I first had to give their situational judgment assessment that, after a couple of a days, my portal reflected that I had passed. I was excited about the prospect of a recruiter call. Then, out of absolutely nowhere, I get an email today in the evening stating that I had not cleared the "interview". Bit hard to do it when there has been no interview! Then I went back to the portal and the status stated "Recruiter interview unsuccessful. Application withdrawn." I have not even been contacted by any recruiter from HSBC let alone given an interview so how can a company as big as this document a straight-up lie like this?

I'm just curious if anyone's faced a similar instance or if there's any possibility of this being a system glitch. They've probably backfilled the role or something, which is okay, but to lie like this over email and on their official portal is unbelievable.
