was this weird?

i just had a second interview with an operations manager for a job. it was over zoom. at the end of the interview, he asked me if i live alone or if i live with somebody. when i said that i live with a roommate he told me he was asking because “sometimes employees struggle with rent but it’s easier if you split your bills with somebody.”

I feel really weird about it. first, asking a woman you don’t know if she lives alone is crazy. second, specifying that you’re worried about my living expenses makes me wonder if you are planning on paying me scraps forever and will villainize me as a greedy employee if i was to ever ask for a raise.

feels like red flags all around. thoughts?
