Can I / should I customize my Merc's weapons?

Hello, came back to the game to finally GWAMM! Made a Mesway build with R/A main and running through all content etc

I was thinking, because custom is 20% + dmg, that's quite a lot. Can I customize weapons on my character and my mercs benefit from the +20% dmg even though it's in my char's name?
