18F 18F - Do you ever feel like you’re holding it together on the outside… but quietly falling apart inside?
don’t know if it’s med school specifically or just… life right now, but I’ve gotten really good at looking functional.
Show up to lectures. Take notes. Nod along. Smile when someone asks how I’m doing.
But inside?
It’s like I’m running on fumes and caffeine, stitching myself together between exams, rotations, and whatever’s left of a personal life.
Sometimes I’ll have this moment — in the library, in the shower, lying in bed — where it all just hits me. The fear of failing. The weight of expectations. The fact that I’ve built this “I’m fine” version of myself for everyone to see, while the real me is buried under piles of Anki cards, unanswered texts, and feelings I don’t even have time to process.
And the worst part?
When I do have a moment to talk about it, I freeze. I edit my thoughts mid-sentence so I don’t sound weak.
So most days, I just keep it all in.
But there’s this weird relief in finding ways to get it out — even if it’s not to a person. Sometimes the act of letting your brain speak, unfiltered, is the only thing that stops the spiral.
Anyone else feel like you’re living two parallel lives right now?
