I visited Crested Butte a few years back and it really left an impression on me as one of the most unique mountain towns I've ever seen. Here are some of the things that really stood out to me:

* Everyone seemed to know each other. Almost every place I went to - hardware store, restaurants, gas stations, tourist shops - the workers seemed to know the other people who were coming in. They would greet each other by name and have a nice chat. Even just people running into one another on the streets. I've been to plenty of small towns before, but this seemed to happen everywhere I went.
* All of the bicycles in Crested Butte get left unlocked. There were bikes everywhere, and people would just get off of them and leave them unlocked outside whenever they arrived at their destination. I was living in Boulder at the time, where doing this would would mean that you lose your bike to theft within 5 minutes, so this was really shocking to see but also amazing in a good, restoring faith in humanity kind of way.
* It had a very young and creative vibe. It's a ski town, so of course it has all of the younger generation of ski/snowboard culture, but it also seemed to have a college town feel, with lots of creative and artsy types. Seemed like a really laid back vibe overall.

All in all, it just really made me think it's one of the last Colorado ski towns that hasn't been completely transformed and tainted by resorts and tourism. Just simply nothing at like Aspen, Telluride, Steamboat, Breckenridge, etc..

Anyways, how does my impression compare to the reality? What's it really like living there?

What's it like living in Crested Butte, Colorado?
