Working between jobs

So everybody should be paid I'm not saying they shouldn't. But what are the thoughts about finding free work or doing unpaid projects of your own in between jobs to help boost your resume? Does this actually help or hurt? I feel like you constantly have to be demonstrating you can deliver on something
