The Goldbox games and the general translation of DnD in other media.

Misc

The goldbox games.

As someone who wasn't born when that series of games came out, as someone who finds it really hard to muster up the courage to play something so old and (I supposed) unrefined

and as someone who is fascinated with game design,

I want to ask you:

What's so good about the goldbox games?

Better yet:

- Why, if they do, do some of the goldbox games work so well? What's different from a standard rpg of that period?

- How did they fare translating a tabletop game, and most of all, narrative and agency, in a videogame of a bygone era? What about the dungeon crawling of more dungeon-crawling focused editions of the game?

- What does actually work even today?

- What doesn't?

And most importantly,

- What do you think is essential to the translation of DnD in another, more limited, interactive medium?

And of course any further addition to the discussion, is extremely appreciated ^^
