Djing my wedding afters. Tips?
What’s up beatmatch? I’m planning to DJ my wedding after party and have it be fairly ravey/house party vibes.
My fiancée and I are big ravers and have a wide variety of music we like and I’m trying to play all of our favorite hits whether that be some tech house from Max Styler, sidepiece, vintage culture, mau p, some dubstep from Zeds dead, Subtronics, Levity, some trance from above and beyond, hip hop remixes from Tape B etc. Basically all of our favorite songs and we love most genres except riddim and Hardstyle. so the BPM range will be quite a bit.
Our wedding ends at 9 PM and we’ve already hired a normal wedding DJ for thatbecause I can’t imagine trying to DJ our own wedding or have a nonprofessional, but they’re gonna be playing mostly wedding classics to get the whole family on the dance floor, but we have a place for us and all of our closest friends to go rave afterwards, probably around 50 people or so.
The setup: I have DJ-flx4 and a Soundboks speaker. Since this will be in one like open floor plan room I’m hoping the Soundboks will loud enough, I don’t really want to have to rent some PA speakers tbh. I also have a Scorpion dual rgb laser machine that I’m currently learning how to control via QLC+ to hopefully do the laser sky effect with a fog machine too. Is a lighting setup a good idea as well?
The music: I currently have about 1000 songs loaded into rekordbox just by using the Apple Music and SoundCloud integration. I don’t think it’s worth it right now to purchase any songs off beatport or buy any songs and download them outright since I don’t even know if I’m gonna want to DJ after this, But hopefully I will. I know the quality is not supposedly the best from the streaming services but for our purpose, I’m hoping that no one will notice. I will be primarily playing house and tech house, but dropping in some good bass music when the timing is right. I have a fair amount of remixes of popular songs that I imagine are gonna be pretty big hit, since half the party aren’t ravers.
Practice: I have a little less than six weeks, but I’m hoping to get good enough to where I don’t have to have my set 100% plan ahead or practiced. My goals have a rough outline here to warm up with, and some transitions that I know are going to work for a slap, but my biggest fear is if the crowd isn’t necessarily Vibing being ill with a transitioning to something else on the fly. Should I just do a lot of practice going from some 128 BPM music to 140 BPM and vice versa?
The vibe: I’ve heard that the crowd can try and match the energy of the DJ so my goals to be as high as fun as possible and as long as my wife and I are fucking dancing with the music that I imagine everyone else will be having a blast too.
Has anyone done anything similar and wanna share some tips? Should I go about practicing my set?
I’ve already got one transition/mashup I’m stoked on. Levels into Pompeii(Audien Remix). The first vocal build up fits perfectly into the second drop of levels.
