Would it be possible to use electromagnetic breaking for cars rather than contact based breaks?

This is probably a very basic explanation and I only understand it at a surface level. Electromagnetic breaking is where a non-magnetic metal passes through a magnetic field, the metal causes eddy currents and it makes the metal slow down a lot. Would this work with car breaks and theoretically make a break with less maintenance needed?
