Apple Devies App Help - Adding music to a ipod classic

I was able to add all the music i wanted on the old itunes desktop app, and now i need to down load a separate music and devices app just to access my ipod. and I cant even add songs on it anymore without fear of syncing it and losing my entire song collection on the Ipod, any suggestions on how to use these terrible apps?
