Thoughts on different degrees wedges

Hey guys, higher handicap and 9 months into golf , I'm a 40 handicap. I play with lower handicap and alot more skilled friends and in and around the green they always reccomended a 60° to me, but with early success came now consistent thinning and topping around the green. Is this a skill issue or should I try and be familiar with a 56°? I know different each club varies with loft but what's the easier to hit and master? I just recently bought a new cleveland CBX4 but my 60° is a old prosimmon which to me feels a budget club, so was wondering do I upgrade the 60° or do I leave it for now and try focus on the 56°?
