Hey all, I'll keep this as concise as possible - caveat; I've been out of the 3d game for a decade so I'm sure I'm playing in a league well below expected, apologies!

I'm trying to model something to be exported as an STL for 3d printing, my base model/test print came out pretty great... but I'm trying to refine it a bit by adding a slight wood grain texture to the top plane alone. Should be pretty straightforward to apply a displacement map of a grayscale image I have, however for the LIFE of me I can't get through my quandary. Here was my process:

* Took an SVG and converted to a mesh, then extruded to desired depth.
* Did a limited dissolve to clean up the polygons in order to bevel all edges (I was getting some weird artifacts trying to do an edge loop and bevel that way (same for bevel modifier), assuming it was an issue with the mesh I didn't catch).
* I separated the top face (the only one I want texture on) to its own object.
* This is where I'm stuck. In order to add a displacement map I need to up the poly count, however every traditional method to subdivide yields 0 results that I can discern. I've tried every method to clean up the mesh (merge by distance, delete loose, etc etc) but it makes no difference.

I freely admit I'm a novice at this but with two kids running around the house I don't have the ability to beat my head against the wall for 5 hours like I did in my c4d days.

tl;dr - I want to add a displacement map to the top face, however I cannot due to the low poly count and am unable to subdivide.

THANKS!
