Why the Liga MX/MLS merge will not work
I don’t study nor do I have much knowledge of anything economics-related (business, finances, etc), so I humbly apologize in advance if that is very evident in this post.
Many people like myself are very against having a “CONCACAF Super League” that results in Liga MX and MLS merging, and it is evident that the idea has been circulating around the heads of the club owners in charge. That being said, it wouldn’t really benefit anyone involved for numerous reasons, those being:
- The Uniqueness of American Sports: Unlike in leagues like the EPL (where the league is owned by the clubs who have a share within the private company), MLS owns every team within the league.
Every decision regarding a club must be made with the approval of the MLS (ex: Having to pay the league for an extra DP roster spot). This lack of power that MLS clubs have won’t please the Liga MX owners at all, since their power will be ripped from them and will therefore lack a voice in decisions regarding the league
- Further Profit Division: As a result of this type of governance, the profit generated from an entire season of the “Super League” will have to be distributed even further (from 30 clubs to 48).
We don’t know for sure which Liga MX teams make a profit and which don’t (as their finances aren’t disclosed to the public), but if their attendance is anything to go by, then clubs like Mazatlan and Juarez don’t generate anything. This in turn will result in teams getting even less money since Less Profit+Further Division=No Money.
- More Pointless Matches: Due to the sheer number of teams within MLS, clubs are forced to play games during the weekdays. If the merge were to happen, this would result in an overwhelming amount of games played (47 x 2 =94). Not to mention the insane traveling that clubs like Pumas have to do to play against Toronto/Montreal/Portland).
Off topic but worth mentioning: We Mexicans are hard workers, therefore we work long hours to provide for our families. As a result, nobody wants to watch a team like America play a team like Austin at 9:00PM on a Wednesday when you have a long day of work the next morning.
In general, the merge won’t provide any type of benefit for anyone involved, financial or otherwise. The entire reason the club owners want it is because they do not want to be punished for their laziness (no relegation = no loss of club value). And no, the MLS isn’t going to surpass Liga MX, that is a fact.
