making this post to hopefully motivate some people that are considering a repaste of their laptops. have a 2021 G15 with and R9 5900HS and a RTX 3070. It's a great laptop use it for uni and gaming.

After noticing that my CPU temps were getting pretty toasty I decided to replace all the paste and putty on my G15. I was hesitant at first because of many Reddit posts saying that replacing and removing liquid metal is a total pain in the ass. Welll still wanted to try and got PTM and putty both from Thermal Grizzly.

As you can see in the pictures, there's a burn mark on the CPU. The GPU paste and some of the putty is all dried up and some VRMS don't make contact. I was pretty shocked to see the CPU burn mark but it kind of explained the temps was getting. AlI the liquid metal spilled out to the sides. With many qtip, a lot of isopropyl alcohol and lots of patience got the liquid metal off the CPU. It wasn't nearly as complicated or hard as hat thought. It just took some time. I also managed to get some of the burns off which took a lot more time. It's not all gone but much better than before. I sadly forgot to take pictures after cleaning it up and reapplying all the thermal paste. :(

I went really wild with the amount of putty because wanted to make sure that all the components make contact. If you do that make sure you tighten the heatsink really well so the ptm makes contact. I read that some people had problems with the ptm not making contact because they used to much putty or too thick pads. I didn't face this issue.

As for the temps can say that in Overwatch 2, same power profile and testing area (also Linux system), my temps went from ~95 to 79 to 84 degrees Celsius. Which is crazy to me. Same with Shadow of the tomb Raider. 90-97 degrees, now 82-89 degrees.

I will post 3dmark results tomorrow but overall it was a great success. Temps down more than 10°C across games which is mind blowing imo.

If anyone facing issues with temps and wants to repaste. Just do it. Don't think too much about it. Just take your time, watch some tutorials and be careful.

That's all, hope motivated someone to do the same as did.:)

Please replace your (old) laptop paste.
