Need help understanding whether I should dispute my credit report
I’m going to preface this by saying I was young and stupid when this happened and have since become much more responsible, so don’t come at me 🤣
In 2021, I stopped paying my TELUS bill for…pandemic-related reasons. I should’ve reached out to people for assistance, but I didn’t. It went to collections, and I did eventually pay the collections company and that was that.
On my credit report, that TELUS account still shows open, which I’ve left alone because I’m led to believe more account age more better, but I’ve just now realized this could be a double-edged sword. Of course the derogatory mark from the collections agency is there and I know that won’t go away until 2027 or so, but there’s no closing date on the collections account (it does show paid, just not closed). There are also 7 missed payments, the only missed payments on my entire credit report, on the TELUS account which remains “open”, which is undoubtedly also having a negative impact on my credit. My score is hanging around the 630-640 range for context.
Should I file a dispute to have the TELUS account appear closed? Would that make any difference to the missed payments appearing? Those missed payments were also all in 2021, I have no idea how long they stay on my report for. I just don’t know if having that account closed on my report would do more harm than good.
