!Why was necessary to deploy that many ships around the planet?

Anyone wanted to travel to different star had to use a jump gate - a literal choke point. A fraction of the ships could handle the blockade.

Not that would helped much against the Mule ofc, but still, too many ships surrounding one planet with narrow entrance.!<
