Why do my wife's (40F) angry rants feel like they are directed at me (42M) even though they are not actually about me?
My wife (40F) and I have (42M) have been together for 20 months. We got married just over 6 months ago. Shortly after getting married, there has been a recurring dynamic where she will get into episodes of being highly activated and angry, and it's very upsetting for me. We're up to 2-3 episodes a week. I feel attacked, but can't articulate why other than it's the tone and energy that she's bringing when talking to me. While it's easier for me to understand why it bothers me if the topic is directed at me or something I did (which is only some of the time), a majority of these episodes are around topics that aren't me or my responsibility. However, the anger comes off in such a way that it feels directed at me. I try to use the toolkit to explore whether she needs validation, space to vent, sympathy, active listening, or problem solving. I directly ask her what would feel best from me or how I can best provide support.
Significantly, I can see the difference when she's venting about work or kid frustrations, but these episodes feel distinctly different. However, most of these episodes that "aren't directed at me," but they almost immediately start weirdly feeling like they are. These are patterns I regularly see: She gets very emphatic; will cut me off mid-sentence; make catastrophic predictions about her or her children; shoot down almost any insight, reflection, or response I bring; enage in extreme labeling "they are gross, evil, a demon, etc."; she'll also misstate what I said or was concerned by to make it sound like I was being unfair or unreasonable.
I know she has a trauma background, and I try to provide a safe space as much as possible, but I don't want to roll over and be a doormat. I am bone tired and depleted from trying to interact and provide a calming sense of presence for her. She just keeps going and going, and she will re-trigger herself, even if I don't say anything. My sleep and peace are dwindling.
What is this dynamic that I am experiencing? If you've seen something like this before, any success in navigating it?
