Finding a new friend group
Within the past year I’ve (early 40s) made the effort to go out and meet people. I met a group of women (30s) through a few similar interests and things were going well for the first few months. I got invited to events and parties. Somewhere along the way I rubbed the “ringleader” of the group (feels silly to even write this but she organizes a lot of events) the wrong way when I asked for a favor. She said no and I thanked her for considering it. I thought no big deal. But since then she’s been super aloof (she’s very chatty and friendly with everyone). I didn’t let it get to me because I thought maybe she was going through something. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt. But it’s evident I somehow upset her since we occasionally cross paths and she’s distant and rarely greets me. Since then I did my best to show up for other group events that someone else in the group invited me to but my job has stretched me thin and I made a habit of showing up late or cancelling. I apologized to this person and explained the situation. I remember nearly being in tears once day as I explained the weight of my job and how I’ve been working until 8pm most nights. She understood. (My job has become so demanding that it’s been impossible to create boundaries. I’ve had a lot put on me and our company has done multiple rounds of layoffs and has kept the top performers while it’s sent a majority of jobs overseas). Within the past month this person has distanced herself from me. I recently reached out to see if she wanted to attend an event together and she said she wouldn’t be able to. Hours later I found out she did attend. I’m at a loss as to what to do since I don’t want to confront her but I did appreciate her and now feel awful that I’ve managed to ruin a friendship. She also recently ignored me at an event despite me trying to engage with her. It was embarrassing because I’ve never had someone physically turn their back to me. While rude I understand why she did it. I know I have to cut my losses and do better but it’s been such a struggle to get out there and meet people. I feel emotionally drained from my awful job (looking for a new one) and having to once again try and make new friends. Anyone else out there deal with having to start over? How did you move forward when you’re already so drained but wanting to find your friend group? I miss my 20s when this was so easy.
