[IL] Contacted while on maternity leave. Move or be terminated
I have been working remotely for a company for the past 6 years. I am currently on maternity leave until the beginning of September. I received a call from my manager this morning notifying me that the company has changed its policy and will no longer have remote workers. All employees must be in the office 5 days a week. They told me that I can either relocate to NC or my employment will be terminated on 12/31/2025. I must sign a form designating my decision and return it to HR by 8/28. Relocating is not an option for me and my family, so I will just be losing my job. I am not sure if it is legal for them to contact me on my maternity leave forcing me to either uproot my family or lose my job. Is all of this their legal right? I am trying to see if I have any sort of a legal leg to stand on against the company. Appreciate any input/advice!
