witnessed domestic abuse for the first time
My best friend of 5 years, Sarah (19F), has been in a relationship with her boyfriend, Jason (17M) for around a year. I never found his behavior alarming in the beginning, and then he began to use aggressive language like calling Sarah a bitch and telling her to shut up all the time. I could definitely tell he didn’t mean it as a joke. Later on about 6 months into the relationship I started to notice he had a tendency to throw things and get angry very easily. I brushed it off as anger issues because he hadn’t ever thrown anything at Sarah, he would just cuss at her or say something mean. A few weeks ago, she told me about how he punched a hole through her door when he became angry over not being able to drink the bottle of alcohol I left at her house. I found this pretty disturbing, especially considering it wasn’t even his property he was destroying. Still, it never crossed my mind that he would ever do anything physical to Sarah.
Yesterday, Sarah called me to celebrate with her at her house since she passed her driver’s test. She requested that I bring alcohol since apparently her boyfriend asked. That was a huge fucking mistake. The night started off nice and we were all getting along playing card games and shit. Sarah’s sister (17F) is also with us. Sarah and I have had a few drinks but nothing too crazy. Then we start to notice that Jason is extremely drunk, slurring his words, can barely walk. It was funny at first and then he started threatening out of nowhere to “beat all our asses” as well as throwing Sarah’s sister’s phone full force at a wall and getting in our faces screaming about literally nothing. He throws up a bit, gets food in his system, and then Sarah brings him inside to lay down. He sleeps for around an hour before he wakes back up and walks to the bathroom to throw up. The bathroom is a little ways down the hallway so me and Sarah’s sister sit in the living room while Sarah helps her boyfriend.
Suddenly we hear violent yelling and screaming coming from Jason. He is pretty conscious at this point and is no longer stumbling or slurring words. Sarah’s sister and I are obviously wondering what’s going on so we walk to the entrance of the bathroom and see Jason attempting to take towels out of the hamper to throw up in it, which was confusing because he was right next to a bathtub, a sink, AND a toilet. Sarah stops him from attempting to puke in the hamper and attempts to redirect him to the bathtub right next to him or the toilet. He’s just yelling and screaming telling her to get the fuck out and to stop being a stupid bitch so I walked back down the hallway to give them some space. However, I hear what sounds like struggle or fighting. As I’m halfway down the hallway I see Sarah’s body fly from inside of the bathroom to the other side of the hallway and against the wall. I was absolutely horrified to say the least. I had never witnessed physical abuse firsthand, let alone my best friend who I cared so much about. I also just wanna note that we’re all pretty small girls against this guy who is like 5’8 and he lifts. Sarah’s sister jumps in front of her when she tries getting back up, and Jason grabs Sarah’s sister and slams her into the door frame of the bathroom. I’m screaming at him to stop at this point, and as soon as me and Sarah pull her sister back, Sarah slams the door on Jason and he started to punch it, putting a hole in the door. We all walk to Sarah’s room while Jason is still in the bathroom basically throwing a fit. Sarah begins to cry and I comfort her. Jason eventually comes out of the bathroom to come in the room, still violent. He doesn’t hit her again but there was many times when he pick things up to throw them and hesitated throwing them at Sarah. Long story short he smashes her mirror and a couple other things and drives home. Not that I even care but he did make it home alive. During the whole interaction I was shaking so bad with adrenaline and my heart rate didn’t even go down until at least an hour later. It was extremely traumatizing for all of us to say the least. When he’s home, he starts texting Sarah saying about how he’s sorry and he didn’t know what he was doing. When she doesn’t immediately forgive him, he starts spewing insults and telling her she deserves to get beat. Fast forward to this morning, she’s telling me that apparently Jason has no recollection of the night before and that he’s so sorry for what he did and he feels like shit. Basically Sarah is taking him back. It pisses me off so much and I think it’s a bunch of bullshit. He remembers what he did and he’s just manipulating the shit out of her. I don’t want this to ruin our friendship but it hurts to see her allowing a man to push her around like that. I don’t even know what to do.
