Frustrated with Etsy Offsite ads?

Help for Seller

Ive been selling with Etsy since 2013(https://www.etsy.com/shop/BeanyAndNoodle) and I have seen the platform evolve in many ways. A recent experience has very much made me question if I will continue with Etsy.I made handmade good dedicating my limited free time as a mom of two to curate and craft handmade crocheted baby blankets. My products are beautiful and made with love and it does my heart well to receive pictures of families enjoying their purchase. Recently, I have noticed that Etsy had enrolled me in offsite-ads automatically. After reviewing the policies around the ads I discovered that Etsy has enrolled me based on my exceeding $10,000 in sales in one calendar year. A little about that, in 2020 in the height of the pandemic I did exceed $10,000 in a year by making masks and selling them. I had thought I was helping keep people safe and dedicated about 10-12 hours per day making, not manufacturing, custom masks for customers. Outside of this one time exception my store does regular business but nowhere close to $10,000.

I reached out to Etsy support back in February on the issue and after opening a case with them I never heard back, case was closed? I then opened another case in May and again it was closed, at least this time I was told why I was enrolled and was told there was no exception process or escalation process. Fast forward to today where I opted to call Etsy. The call was recorded and the representative was pleasant. After the thorough explanation and review of our previous cases, the rep concluded the call by letting me know that there was no exception process and no way to be removed from the offsite ads and advised that if I disagreed I was free to leave the platform. The representative did explain how ads can help my store by driving more foot traffic to my store, and I do not disagree. I get that Etsy is providing advertisement but keep in mind that I am bringing people to their platform as well and receiving nothing for it.

  1. No process for escalation or review
  2. No opt out process what-so-ever for business that exceed this sales quota, even once
  3. The overall response I received was "if you dont like it leave Etsy"

As a handmade good I strive to resource quality goods and I dedicate my time and attention to each product I create. I have had nothing but positive reviews and excellent buyer feedback. Etsy does not recognize that these ads are drastically cutting into my earnings for each product. They are taking 12% of my total sale and I have no choice. I am already having to compete with retail chain stores and having to manage my cost to the consumer as a result. This limits my ability to increase my products cost and again takes money out of my pocket.

I want to continue making products for families to enjoy, but not at the risk of coming out of pocket for the materials that go into the product; I make next to nothing on my time investment. I realize I am not in manufacturing and am happy for that as I get to control quality and quantity and ensure that I can create a lasting product for babies.

So at this point Ive vetted my concerns to Etsy, and even included a write up to the BBB. I am coming here to find out what others experiences are with offsite-ads on Etsy. I dont want to close my store but after 12 years Etsy continues to take more and more out of my pocket without recognizing my dedication to the platform or hard work.

Thoughts?
