Crown pain

question

About 2 years ago I needed a very large filling, more recently, I chipped that same tooth, had absolutely no pain at all (didn’t even notice I had done it, just felt the sharp edge), went to the dentist about 2 weeks later just to be cautious. The dentist removed the filling, re-filled the filling/chip. That day/the following, I had severe pain when biting, swollen gums around the tooth and a bit of pain around my jaw, I used chlorexidine mouthwash and it all resolved within a day except for the nerve pain when I bite. Returned to the dentist about a month later, he has now recommended a crown for a fractured tooth. I had my crown prep/temp crown inserted 2 days ago (no X-Rays taken), the nerve pain when biting has gone down significantly but definitely is still present, is this normal? I appreciate the crown is a temp and Ill fitting but I am very nervous that I need a root canal (which is VERY expensive so avoiding at all cost is if possible, crown isn’t coming cheap either…) or something worse is going on and I might end up paying for a crown that doesn’t resolve my pain when biting. I would say the pain pre crown when I bit down was 7-9/10, now maybe 4/10, otherwise no sensitivity to hot/cold, no other pain when not biting etc. my question is, does this sound normal, is nerve pain when biting expected after a temp crown is inserted, does it sound like I might need a root canal? TIA
