get off RCN/Astound

I’m in Brookline and just switched from Astound (RCN) to Fios after the town finally let them install their hardware (fiber optic stuff) on the hill I live on. If you can do the same, do it.

We had RCN/Astound for over a decade. Started at about $80 a month for 400 Mbps and ended up at $130 after repeated price hikes. When I called to ask about it, the bill mysteriously dropped to $90 for 600 Mbps.

Fios finally came to my hill for $79 a month for 1 Gbps (student discount, autopay discount). We switched right away. When I called Astound to cancel, they told me we would have full service until our billing period ended on August 25 (so we’d have internet until the Fios techs did their thing at our house). That night our speeds dropped in half and the connection became spotty. I called tech support and the rep said our “disconnect was filed incorrectly”. She fixed it and our speeds went back to normal…

Higher prices, repeated hikes, worse service, and slower speeds. If you have been stuck with Astound because Fios was not available, check again. If you can get Fios now, do it. Boston Broadband please don’t shill your services on my post (no offense). This is not an ad, i am just looking out for consumers like myself in Brookline.
