Surface Book 3 Trackpad Not Working After Reattaching Screen – Tried Multiple Fixes
Hello everyone,
I recently purchased a used Surface Book 3, which has been a long-time dream device for me. After a lengthy process involving customs and shipping to my country, I finally received it and was thrilled to get started.
The device arrived with Windows 10 installed, which I used briefly before opting to perform a clean installation of Windows 11 via USB. Everything worked perfectly for the first couple of days. However, an issue arose when I detached the screen to show it to my girlfriend and reattached it shortly after — something I had done multiple times before without issue.
After reattaching the screen, I noticed the trackpad on the keyboard base stopped responding entirely. I restarted the device, but the issue persisted.
Here is what I have tried so far:
- Clean installation of Windows 10, Windows 11, and Ubuntu Linux
- Installation of the official Surface firmware and driver pack (.msi) from Microsoft on both Windows versions
- Multiple Windows Update cycles, including optional updates
- Running the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit with administrator privileges
- Confirmed the trackpad is non-functional even in the UEFI menu
- Carefully cleaned the connection pins on the base using an electrical surface cleaner, in case of poor contact (NOT THE ONES IN THE UPPER/SCREEN PART OF THE LAPTOP.)
At this point, I’m unsure whether this could be a hardware-level issue with the keyboard base or a firmware/driver problem.
If anyone has encountered a similar issue or has suggestions for further troubleshooting, I would greatly appreciate your input.
Thank you in advance!
