got hit by a car while riding on my motorized scooter, ended up getting a ticket - would it be worth it for me to fight in court?
location: tampa, florida, usa
hi everyone! so yesterday i got hit by a car while riding my motorized scooter. i’m okay, my injuries are minor, no major damage to the car or my scooter. while i was in the hospital, a deputy came in and ended up giving me a ticket for “driving vehicle upon sidewalk or bicycle path, operating an electric/motorized scooter on a sidewalk, involved in a crash.” it also is noted this deputy did not witness this. for context, my scooter does not go faster than 18mph, when i got hit i don’t remember the speed i was going but i couldn’t have been going faster than 15mph and the car was at a stop sign and started to go so they couldn’t have been going faster than 5-10mph. my scooter does not have turn signals or a license plate so i stay on the sidewalk, plus i just feel safer there since the bike lanes in my area are incredibly close to the car lane (like a foot difference). i also want to note i don’t have a drivers license, so i’m sure you could assume that i’ve never gotten a ticket before so this is very new territory for me.
my ticket is $163. i honestly don’t really feel like fighting it but i also don’t have the money to pay for my ticket at the moment. i have 30 days to decide if i want to fight it or pay the ticket.
thanks so much in advance!
