AIO, I ended my relationship after discovering my boyfriend shares an emotional, intimate Spotify playlist with a co-worker
I was with my boyfriend for nearly two years. We had a semi-long-distance relationship. About five hours apart, and usually saw each other on weekends and special occasions. Throughout our time together, I tried to be understanding and trusting despite the distance, but over time, a few things started to weigh on me.
I noticed he sometimes sent selfies of himself lying in bed to his co-workers. When I asked about it, he said it was just a casual, harmless way they shared funny or silly pictures within their group. He assured me it was normal and platonic. I wanted to trust him, but it made me uneasy and felt a bit inappropriate. I didn’t make a big deal of it, but I noted my discomfort.
My often listens without headphones. One day, out of curiosity, I looked at his Spotify account on my phone. That’s when I discovered a collaborative playlist he shares with a female co-worker. Someone in her late 40s, while we’re in our mid 20s(me) and early 30s(him). The playlist, called “Edelene” (a blend of their names) The most recent song added was 9 days ago
What caught me off guard was the playlist’s content. It’s filled with romantic, intimate, and emotional songs. About devotion, marriage, longing, and deep connection.
This didn’t feel like a casual or friendly playlist. The intimacy suggested by the song choices, the ongoing dedication, and the blended name made it feel like a private emotional space just for the two of them.
I also remembered that weeks ago, he mentioned a woman at work who’s in an open marriage and that he slept with her years ago. He said he didn’t feel guilty because it’s not his responsibility to be loyal to either of them. While I tried to be understanding because that is his past, it unsettled me.
Given everything I’ve seen and felt, I can’t help but wonder if this is the same woman, the one he shared playlist with.
When I pieced together the bed selfies likely only sent to her, the emotional playlist they share, and his past stories, it became clear to me that something was deeply wrong. Although I didn’t have direct proof of cheating, the pattern of behavior was enough to break my trust and hurt me.
I want to be clear: I’m not naive about friendships or workplace relationships. I believe coworkers can share music and jokes in a completely harmless way. And yes, almost all of the songs written in this world are about love. But this felt different. This playlist felt like a secret emotional space meant just for the two of them, something that crossed a boundary for me as his partner.
I’ve tried to be mature and rational about it, but this experience really made me reflect on trust, respect, and emotional fidelity.
Am I overreacting for feeling this way and deciding to end the relationship?
