Area-51 Laptop and Thunderbolt 5 Docks

Purchasing

I'm currently running my 18" Area-51 off of a Dell WD22TB4 dock that I purchased back when I had an XPS. The combination isn't horrible, but the fan on the dock is almost always running at 100%, even when the laptop is turned off. In addition, the dock only supports DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 display outs, and doesn't appear to support DSC on those DisplayPort ports either... so I'm in the market for a new dock.

Right now I'm torn between the Dell SD25TB5 and Caldigit TS5 Plus. In the Dell dock's favor, even if not explicitly designed for it, both it and my laptop are made by Dell so there's less of a chance of compatibility issues. On top of that, it has three full-size (two DP, one HDMI) display outs versus the Caldigit's one DP, so there's no need for USB-C display adapter cables and the headaches those sometimes bring. Lastly, it claims to support 300W of charging to Dell laptops, though this last point may be moot for us Alienware owners. Unsurprisingly, no Alienware laptops are listed on the compatibility list, and even if it is able to send 300W to an Area-51, that's still 60W short of the 360W the power brick supplies, and best case would limit what power profiles it allows us to select. All that to say I connect a power brick now and don't expect that to change. There's also the fact that it has the exact same fan cutouts as the WD22TB4, so fan noise remains a major concern.

As for the Caldigit, it has the advantages of no fan cutouts that I can see, more and sometimes faster I/O thanks to the dual USB controllers and explicit advertisement of high-refresh-rate display support vs. Dell's much more modest 4K@120 Hz claim. On the other hand, again it's a third-party dock and one primarily targeting Mac users at that.

Has anyone tried either one of these with an Area-51? Thoughts?
