Need Advice on Competency Certificate Requirements for Firearm Training

I’m based in Pretoria and looking to get a competency certificate to start my journey with firearm ownership, specifically for educational purposes (want to teach my young daughter about firearm safety at a range). I’ve been reading up on the Firearms Control Act, but the process for getting a competency certificate seems intense!

But I have some questions for those who’ve been through it:

1 What’s the real timeline for getting a competency certificate in 2025? I’ve heard 90–120 days

2 Any recommendations for PFTC-accredited training providers in Pretoria that are beginner-friendly and good with explaining the legal stuff?

3 For those with kids, have you found ranges that offer supervised training for minors to learn safely? How do you navigate the FCA rules for this?

4 Any tips for the application process (SAPS 517 form) or dealing with the Designated Firearms Officer? Common pitfalls to avoid?
