Give me an honest grade and how I can improve
Hello,
I am looking for some advice on how I currently stand and what the best way to move forward. I am 24 for context. My current balances are below:
Income: 55k + 5% in bonuses a year 2nd Income: ~$1200 a month (tips based, only twice a week)
Savings: HYSA: 10.5k (~8 months emergency fund) IRA: 3k Investing: 2k (separate from my IRA, thought is that is like a HYSA+) 401k: $0 (just started contributing because my company requires 1 year of employment before matching)
Debt: Student Loans: 19k - 3.5% interest (in forbearance until November) Car Loan: 22.5k - 5.25% interest
I had a car from 2005 which started to shit the bed so I got a new car, new as in brand new 2025. The new car is probably my worst financial decision to date but the monthly payments are manageable and I over pay every month to pay it off quicker. I live in a relatively LCOL area and I split a small apartment with my SO where I only have to pay $300 a month. My current train of thought is to take my secondary income and split it between paying my car off faster and contributing to my IRA, ~$600 a month to each.
What I’m looking for is: How am I doing and is my train of thought correct in focusing IRA contributions and paying off my car?
